by Rex Jayson Tuozo "The Six Sigma Guy"
The question "What do you want when you grow up?" has always been asked of us since the time we started talking.  When we were young, we can reply right away with, "A doctor", "An engineer", "A teacher","the President of the Philippines", or anything what our parent are doing, or what they want us to be.

Fast forward to the time we select what course to take in college (Uni), admit it or not, we usually had no clue.  We usually take what our parents want us to take, or what is conveniently available.

After graduation, and even several years after , we still do not know where we're heading and still have no idea what are our career-purpose in life.

The good news is, wherever you are in your career-life, it is never too late to find your career-purpose.

If you are tired and sick of feeling like you're always rowing "with the flow", or whatever--the-world-takes-me-to, then the the framework below and these pointers (Stahl, 2015) could help you out:

  • Take an inventory of your current path and figure out what matters most to you.
  • Who are you proving yourself to?
  • Is there another way to get there?
  • When you dig deep, what do you want to have happen in your life?
  • What is so compelling that it pulls you in?

If you have the answers, validate if that matches the red dot below, if not re-assess/ re-evaluate.

If yes, THAT is what you should do next in your career.

Manager Helps Company Save 7.5M Per Year, Gets Green Belt Certified

MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  Aldrin Tandang, currently with Sky Cable Corporation, earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification last February 24 of this year. In a recent interview, Aldrin talks about his Six Sigma Experience as he identified the problems that were needed to be attended, the solutions that were necessary, and the changes that were delivered to his company.
To be certified in Six Sigma, one has to complete an actual Six Sigma project and apply process improvement tools, methodology and techniques learned in class.  "That's one reason why companies give high value for Certified Six Sigma individuals.  One does not just attend a program and receive his certification, but has to successfully apply and show proper use of tools and methodology with actual work processes.  One has to earn his Six Sigma certification," Tuozo said.  "If you attend our Six Sigma programs, unlike other training providers, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Black Belt to help you complete your project," Tuozo added.

“Coaching process is very important. Why? This is your opportunity to listen from colleagues who have completed and experienced six sigma projects. They selflessly share the best practices using six sigma tools, and show how it should be practically done to make every results effective.” – Aldrin Tandang, Certified Six Sigma Green Belt
In the first quarter of 2015, there was an increasing rate of approximately 67.14% of non-moving box inventory of Sky Cable’s Warehouse. This resulted to the non-issuance of available boxes, and functional warehouse locations being occupied. Aldrin’s goal was to reduce the inventory rate to less than 5% by the end of September the same year.
By the end of his project, Aldrin was able to achieve his goal. He was able to improve the process Sigma from 1.05 to 4.08; With non-moving boxes maintained below 5%, Marketing and Logistics Teams were able to yield good forecast. These results led to a financial impact of 500k per year in terms of Operational costs, 2M per year for Materials cost, and 5M per year for Warehouse costs – summing up to around 7.5 Million Pesos worth of savings per year.
“For those who are currently conducting their own projects, your focus is very vital to complete it.” -Aldrin

100 + L&D and HR Professionals Earn Six Sigma White Belt Certification

by Crisglen John Villegas
MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  The resource speaker for 2016 September Tipanan session of Philippine Society for Training and Development (PSTD) is no other than Mr. Rex Jayson Tuozo. He is a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt & Lean Six Sigma Program Director; also known as “The Six Sigma Guy”, he turned one of PSTD’s monthly Tipanan into a Party.
Last September 22, 2016, our very own Six Sigma Guy introduced several key concepts about the Six Sigma Program; from the importance of knowing these concepts, to the benefits that both an individual and a company can gain with these concepts kept in mind. He also imparted a couple of useful Six Sigma tools to a crowd comprised of more than a hundred admirable professionals.
“Our mission is to make Lean Six Sigma Simple & Practical to make it Effective” – Rex “The Six Sigma Guy” Tuozo, Master Black Belt, Lean Six Sigma Program Director.
Always wanting to make sure that everyone learns something from his class, Rex did not only explain the Six Sigma concepts and tools. He taught the crowd how to utilize the tools. He also made sure that after his talk, the people would be able to take home something that will be of help to them – something simple and practical, yet at the same time, very effective.
Learning filled the entire venue: people conversing, sharing, presenting their synthesis with one another... – This is the Six Sigma Party Feels.
That being said, the audience did not only sit and listen to the speaker all throughout the program. Rather, they experienced the Six Sigma tools hands-on: they were divided to a group of five, tasked to make their own diagrams and analyses by using information from their own workplace. Afterwards, they presented it to other groups. Learning filled the entire venue: people conversing, sharing, presenting their synthesis with one another; inspecting the tools and their ideas, and formulating answers to their own questions. The audience were all wallowing in new knowledge – they were enjoying the Six Sigma Party!

After the debriefing session, and a few more interactive activities, The Six Sigma Guy bestowed these professionals their Six Sigma White Belt Certification, the first yet at the same time, a very big step in the corporate ladder.

MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  Erwin Ordonez, now the Project Manager – Business Process Excellence at TELUS International Philippines, earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification last November 13, 2015.
Don’t quit!  Persistence, determination, and patience are the major characteristics of Six Sigma practitioners. – Erwin Ordonez, Certified Six Sigma Green Belt
In a recent interview, Erwin talks about his experience in his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. Erwin tells the story behind his certification and even gave some tips for those who are currently pursuing their Green Belt Certification.
"That's one reason why companies give high value for Certified Six Sigma individuals.  One does not just attend a program and receive his certification, but has to successfully apply and show proper use of tools and methodology with actual work processes.  One has to earn his Six Sigma certification," - Rex Tuozo, Master Black Belt, “The Six Sigma Guy”

Previously from Jollibee Worldwide Services- Logistics, Erwin mentioned that he felt both excitement and fear as he starts and executes his Six Sigma project. He also mentioned how not only in the project was he able to apply what he learned, but also on how he views processes, business, and customers – he was “enlightened by the experience”, he mentioned.
My Six Sigma training was an enlightening experience as it will change how you view your process, business and customers. And Sir Rex, as a mentor, makes Six Sigma very easy and practical to learn. -Erwin
Erwin’s project is aimed towards reducing the turnaround time of trucks in the warehouse from an average of 6.5 hours to 2.8 hours. After achieving this processing time, overtime hours of employees lessened, operational efficiency increased, acquirement of raw materials became faster, which prevented stock outs and loss of sales. In the later parts of the interview, he left us with four tips that he wanted to share to those who are currently conducting their project:
  • Don’t be afraid to ask Sir Rex, or your mentor if you need help on your project;
  • Not all Six Sigma tools can be used on your project, use the tools you will only need;
  • You can’t do a Six Sigma project alone no matter how good you are, People skills come first than technical skills;
  • And most importantly, Don’t QUIT!  Persistence, determination and patience are the major characteristics of Six Sigma practitioners.
For those who haven’t taken the Green Belt program yet, I highly recommend you to take it. It’s a huge investment for your personal career and market value and you will be able to learn and apply the Six Sigma tools and methodology in your work or business whatever the industry. - Erwin

Assistant Manager Saves P 74M Using Six Sigma, Earns Green Belt Certification

by Crisglen John Villegas
MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  Arthur Flores Jr., former Assistant Manager in one of the BPO companies in the Philippines, earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification last February 24 this year.
In a recent interview, Arthur tells us his story as he pursued his Six Sigma Green Belt certification. He shared how he started his project; up to the results that he and the company reaped. He even left some tips for those who are currently pursuing their certification.
"If you attend our Six Sigma programs, unlike other training providers, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Black Belt to help you complete your project," - Rex Tuozo, Master Black Belt, “The Six Sigma Guy”
TIP #1: “Don’t overthink. Just because you think the solution is too simple, doesn’t mean it’s not worth a try. We are not here to make grandiose solutions. We are here to solve the root cause.” – Arthur Flores Jr., Certified Six Sigma Green Belt

Arthur mentioned that at the start of his project, he felt lost and overwhelmed. However, thanks to the circuit that their Master Black Belt taught them, they were able to overcome these challenges. It helped them not only in solving the problem but also in maintaining and managing the positive changes that they’ve brought to the company.
Arthur’s project was about the reduction of a defective output generated by their staff which are then received by their customers. According to their project analysis, this defective output leads to the loss of customers. After the project was formally closed, it halved the production of these defective output: from 18.42% down to 9.47% -  saying that this kind of progress was never before seen in their company. Because of this, customer attrition decreased by 71.69% leading to the company saving a total of PHP 74,880,000 in revenue.
TIP #2: “Listen. If you want to succeed on every project you will do, you must know how to listen to your Master Black Belt or Black Belt. Also, listen to the process owner themselves. They always know more than we do. We are here to facilitate and not be a one-man team.” -Arthur

In the later parts of the interview, Arthur shared one last thing about his experience; he shared how much their Master Black Belt, Mr. Tuozo, commonly known as “The Six Sigma Guy”, has been “accommodating” and “patient” as he guides them until they were able to finish their project; and encourages those who are currently pursuing their certification to never hesitate to approach him, no matter how complicated it is.

“We are fortunate that our Master Black Belt, Rex, is accommodating and patient enough to guide us. Never hesitate to approach him. No matter how complicated you think it is, he will be more than willing to guide you until you finish your project. Trust him.” - Arthur

MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  Formerly with 51Talk, one of the fastest growing online English Language Teaching (ELT) platform in China and the Philippines, Raymond “Mon” Apolonio earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification back in August 2015.
In a recent interview, Raymond Apolonio reminisced with us and shared his experience about his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. Mon, shared his story as he faced both struggles and success. He even shared some words to encourage those who are currently pursuing their Green Belt Certification.
“I encountered resistance because individuals who are not fully aware of Six Sigma or process improvement in general has that tendency to get in the way. I stood my ground and once they saw results, it was downhill ride from there.” – Raymond Apolonio, Certified Six Sigma Green Belt

"If you attend our Six Sigma programs, unlike other training providers, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Black Belt to help you complete your project,"– Rex Tuozo, Master Black Belt, “The Six Sigma Guy”

The project that got Mon certified is about the reduction of missed enrollments/sales conversion opportunity from 8% to 4% that year. To their surprise, even before their target deadline approached, they were able to decrease their defect rate to 2% instead. This resulted to the enrollment/conversions doubling up. Not only that, because of streamlining and the installation of new value added processes, the complaint rate decreased from 5% to 2% at the end of the month - this aspect wasn’t even in his project charter!
In his testimonial speech in 2015, he mentioned how companies would often view and give positive responses as they go through his resume, and that was even before his certification. Now, He is a valued employee of Home Credit Philippines. Employed as the Project and Process Manager, acting as Project Coach on all process improvement projects. He aspires to be a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt and is planning to pursue it next year.
“It’s like building your own dream car” It may seem intimidating at first, (trust me I know) and during my time, I had to do and redo a LOT in my project to make sure that everything fits. Once you finally get it right, the sense of accomplishment is rewarding and you’d know that you just did something that only less than 3% can do.” –Mon

by Crisglen John Villegas

MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  From Harte Hanks, Peejay Concepcion, Quality Supervisor, earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification last August 26, 2016, last day of Six Sigma Philippines' 18th Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Program for Service Industry.
"…my advice is for you to follow the pre and post Six Sigma workout, because that's exactly your storyboard. What you did here, that's what you should be putting on your Powerpoint presentation. So everything that you learned here is your storyboard…” - Peejay
Peejay shared what catalyzed him to conduct his project; how much was the need for it, and how he was able to complete one with such a tremendous financial impact to the company. He imparted some tips to the graduating class about how the Six Sigma training, tools, and methodologies can and will be of great use to them for the benefit of their respective companies; Inspiring the Green Belt class to complete their projects and get certified.
The project that got Peejay certified is a defect deduction project. The Project is geared towards a countermeasure against invalid tickets that they generate, which are hurting the company. By utilizing Six Sigma, Peejay and his team was able to reduce their defect rate from 34% to 5%; with a financial impact of at least P16 million pesos which made his sponsor impressed and elated.

"If you attend our Six Sigma programs, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Master Black Belt or Black Belt to coach you and help you complete your project"
-Six Sigma Philippines
“...when I started my project, my goal was to reduce defects from 34% to 30%, hindi naman ako ambisyosa (I'm not ambitious).  After using Six Sigma and implementing the project's action items, it went down significantly to 5%," Peejay added.
Peejay ended his testimonial speech by reminding the current class how the Six Sigma can be utilized in their own companies, saying: “It's really not important if you put there a different Project, there's many opportunities that we can use the six sigma. The role of Six Sigma is to improve processes, so if you go to a company, there's already a process, you just need to improve it."

PH based US Tech Startup Deputy Manager Earns Six Sigma Certification, Reaps P1M Annualized Cost Savings

Crisglen John Villegas
MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  From Thumbtack, a tech startup based in San Franciso California USA, Pascual Jerome Pattaui earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification last August 26, 2016 at the last day of Six Sigma Philippines' Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Program for Service Industry (Wave 18).
Going by the nickname “Al”, he shared the roadblocks that he encountered while conducting his project, how he was able to overcome these roadblocks and turn them into milestones, and the significance of his Six Sigma training towards the success of his project.  Al also shared some tips and words of encouragement to inspire the graduating Green Belt Class to complete their projects and get certified.
"Companies give high value for Certified Six Sigma individuals because one does not just attend a program and gets certified by merely attending a seminar or passing written exams.  To be certified, one has to successfully apply the tools, show proper use of methodology and techniques, with actual work processes.  In short, one has to earn his Six Sigma certification." – Rex "The Six Sigma Guy" Tuozo, Certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
To be certified in Six Sigma, one has to complete an actual process improvement project and apply Six Sigma tools, methodology and techniques learned in class.

“Last year, my company asked me to take a Six Sigma class so I could start projects that aim to reduce process delays and defects and bring cost savings.  I researched and checked all providers here in the Philippines.  I can say that joining Six Sigma Philippines' class was one of the best decisions I have made,"  Al said in his testimonial speech.
Al's project reduced the average QA error rate from 9.04% to 6.67% which increased the overall QA score to 98%, reduced snippets rework by 2% and projected annualized rework cost savings of approximately 21,000 USD or P1,000,000.00.
"If you attend our Six Sigma programs, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Master Black Belt or Black Belt to coach you and help you complete your project"
                                                        -Six Sigma Philippines
In the closing parts of his testimonial speech, Al also shared that one big factor of his recent promotion was completing his project.   Now, as a Certified Six Sigma Green belt, Al continues to apply and evolve the process to further reduce the defect rates, bring bigger numbers for the company’s annual cost savings, and improve work processes for his colleagues.
