Assistant Manager Saves P 74M Using Six Sigma, Earns Green Belt Certification

by Crisglen John Villegas
MAKATI CITY, Philippines-  Arthur Flores Jr., former Assistant Manager in one of the BPO companies in the Philippines, earned his Six Sigma Green Belt Certification last February 24 this year.
In a recent interview, Arthur tells us his story as he pursued his Six Sigma Green Belt certification. He shared how he started his project; up to the results that he and the company reaped. He even left some tips for those who are currently pursuing their certification.
"If you attend our Six Sigma programs, unlike other training providers, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Black Belt to help you complete your project," - Rex Tuozo, Master Black Belt, “The Six Sigma Guy”
To be certified in Six Sigma, one has to complete an actual Six Sigma project and apply process improvement tools, methodology and techniques learned in class.  "That's one reason why companies give high value for Certified Six Sigma individuals.  One does not just attend a program and receive his certification, but has to successfully apply and show proper use of tools and methodology with actual work processes.  One has to earn his Six Sigma certification," Tuozo said.  "If you attend our Six Sigma programs, unlike other training providers, you get continuous support after the program, for no additional cost.  You'll be assigned a Black Belt to help you complete your project," Tuozo added.
TIP #1: “Don’t overthink. Just because you think the solution is too simple, doesn’t mean it’s not worth a try. We are not here to make grandiose solutions. We are here to solve the root cause.” – Arthur Flores Jr., Certified Six Sigma Green Belt

Arthur mentioned that at the start of his project, he felt lost and overwhelmed. However, thanks to the circuit that their Master Black Belt taught them, they were able to overcome these challenges. It helped them not only in solving the problem but also in maintaining and managing the positive changes that they’ve brought to the company.
Arthur’s project was about the reduction of a defective output generated by their staff which are then received by their customers. According to their project analysis, this defective output leads to the loss of customers. After the project was formally closed, it halved the production of these defective output: from 18.42% down to 9.47% -  saying that this kind of progress was never before seen in their company. Because of this, customer attrition decreased by 71.69% leading to the company saving a total of PHP 74,880,000 in revenue.
TIP #2: “Listen. If you want to succeed on every project you will do, you must know how to listen to your Master Black Belt or Black Belt. Also, listen to the process owner themselves. They always know more than we do. We are here to facilitate and not be a one-man team.” -Arthur

In the later parts of the interview, Arthur shared one last thing about his experience; he shared how much their Master Black Belt, Mr. Tuozo, commonly known as “The Six Sigma Guy”, has been “accommodating” and “patient” as he guides them until they were able to finish their project; and encourages those who are currently pursuing their certification to never hesitate to approach him, no matter how complicated it is.

“We are fortunate that our Master Black Belt, Rex, is accommodating and patient enough to guide us. Never hesitate to approach him. No matter how complicated you think it is, he will be more than willing to guide you until you finish your project. Trust him.” - Arthur
