ASEAN Integration: PH's Tale of the Tape

8/13/2014

Whether you like it or not, ready or not, ASEAN integration is looming in the distant future.  How will it effect leaders in the market place?  How will it affect the small players?  How will an open economy, and no job permit required, affect Filipino professionals who are already in a cut-throat competition with very limited jobs, when very good foreign nationals start swarming in the job market?

These are few questions that look like threats but can also be opportunities.  But how to do you transform it from threats to opportunities?  The answer, PREPARATION.  Sadly, we have this Filipino culture of last-minute syndrome, like beating the red light.  The good news is, we still have a year and a half to start preparing.  Make our processes more efficient, more effective and reduce the cost of poor quality where we experience cash leaks.  Lean Six Sigma is an effective organizational program to do that.

For individuals, up-skilling is the best preparation you can make.  Take continuing education classes, and certification programs that you make your CV stand-out and make you 10 steps ahead from others.

ASEAN Integration: Tale of the tape
Yes we know, in terms of height, we are on the bottom of the list.  We maybe short in stature but Filipinos are the best and the brightest.  Do you agree?

What is the Best Trait of a Change Agent?

2/1/2014

What is the number one question I get from HR Managers and Business Owners who are looking to hire Six Sigma Professionals?  "What is the Best Trait of a Process Improvement professional?  Is it the person's technical skills in statistics?  The number of projects she has completed?  The number of persons he has trained in DMAIC and process improvement tools?

For me the most important trait of a Change Agent is Tenacity.  Persistent determination to go against all odds.  The internal motivation to continue and keep going even if all else fail.  Tenacity.

What Qualities Make Your Work Satisfying?

A blessed Christmas and I wish good health for all of you this 2014!

Only 4 days to go before we end the year.  Time really flies so fast.  It has been a little over 6 months since I launched this blog, found Six Sigma Philippines, and started a Six Sigma independent consulting career full-time.  It was a big risk.  A path less traveled.  It was never easy, choosing a high-risk work over a handsome and guaranteed monthly pay check, bountiful variable bonuses and benefits, and a gold plated title from a multinational company to boast with.  Initially, I thought I'll have more free time to spend, but it was the exact opposite.  I was burning the oil from midnight to noon to midnight.  I thought working as an independent professional means having no boss, but it turns out, all my clients are my bosses- with different needs, wants, attitudes and expectations.  Doing not just my expertise but also market research, business development, client management, supplier sourcing, finance and accounting and others are the main reason why only few dare to be in this situation.

Having the autonomy, the challenge of complexity, and the line of sight between effort and rewards, make it all worth it.

I'll end with a quote of M. Gladwell's best selling book- Outliers.

"Those 3 things- autonomy, complexity, and a connection between effort and rewards- are, most people agree, the 3 qualities that work has to have if it is to be satisfying.  Not how much money we make that ultimately makes us happy between 8 to 5." ---Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell

----------------------------

PS  Do you experience the said 3 qualities at work:  Autonomy, complexity and a direct connection between effort and rewards.  If not, time to reflect and make the big move in 2014.  Do you want to be a full time theater actor?  A singer?  Start a restaurant?  An entrepreneur?    Study law?  Be a chef or a fashion designer?  It is never too late.  You are the master of your fate, the captain of your soul!

The Most Important Quality of a Six Sigma Black Belt

10/30/2013

I always get this question from my Six Sigma students:  "What is the most important quality of a Six Sigma professional?"

Some say its the Six Sigma technical skills
On one of my first few posts on this blog, I shared one meeting with a Quality Director of a US Health Care company that recently set-up a shared services company in Taguig.  Our meeting went from a casual dinner to the Director asking me to apply and work for him.  He was like my Advanced Statistic PHD professor who quizzed my knowledge about advanced statistical tools.  I was not surprised since he was an Engineering graduate and spent most of his career in a manufacturing company doing Design of Experiments as part of their Research and Development (R&D).  The problem is, Six Sigma projects in the service industry (which includes Banks, Insurance, BPO, Call Centers, etc.) rarely needs advanced statistical tools like DOE.

Others say its the leadership skills, facilitation skills, presentation skills, level of support from the management team, and the list goes on and on.

For me, everything is important.  A Six Sigma Black Belt should have a working knowledge in Six Sigma tools-methodologies and minimum level of the mentioned skills.  But to pick one most important quality, its TENACITY.

Without it, skills and knowledge will lead you nowhere.  Around 95% of the hundreds of six sigma projects I have led and coached, at least one point in time on the project duration, the project team and I thought we hit a dead end.  Persistent determination, or tenacity would drive your team to success and hit your goal.  Just like what you see on the illustration above, your plan is very different from the Universe's plans for you and your project team.

Tenacity is the lifeblood of a Six Sigma professional.
